6 Preventive Measures To Keep Gingivitis And Bleeding Gums Away

February 20, 2018

Gingivitis is considered to be one of the biggest reasons for loss of teeth and low oral hygiene. Bleeding gums go hand in hand with gingivitis and cause a havoc to the oral hygiene. Gingivitis refers to a simple inflammation of the gums and can also lead to bleeding in the gums. The color of the gums also changes when you get gingivitis, they turn into a bluish red color. If the gums are swollen, it becomes easier for them to start bleeding, especially when you are brushing your teeth. Let us look at some measures that can help in prevention of bleeding gums and gingivitis.

  • Brush the right way
Brushing on a regular basis and keeping your oral hygiene high is one of the best ways to keep away from bleeding gums or gingivitis. You can help in prevention the conditions if you brush and floss twice a day as well as between meals. You can clean your teeth after meals with an internal cleaner or a floss if you do not want to brush. It is ideal to block sometimes in the day for oral hygiene; this is easy to achieve as you will not be spending more than three to five minutes on one session.
  • Keep you gum line clean
It is important to clean your gum line, as that is the part where most of the plaque is collected. If not cleaned, plaque can start adding up and hamper the health of your teeth. The gum line is the most neglected area when brushing, according to many dentists. It is the gum line that needs to be cleaned regularly if you wish to prevent bleeding gums or gingivitis. All you have to do is change the way you hold your toothbrush while brushing. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth, this will ensure that half your brush cleans your gums and the other half cleans your teeth.
  • Storage
Germs can settle on your toothbrush along with your teeth. Always store your toothbrush in an upright position. If you store your toothbrush in a closed container or a cover, you need to stop doing this on a regular basis. Carry a container or a cover only when you are travelling. If you leave a wet toothbrush in closed container on an everyday basis, it will only increase germ growth as a moist environment is ideal for germ buildup. Along with this, the germs can be transferred from one brush to another. So, when you are storing two toothbrushes, make sure you store them in separate sections.
  • Strengthen the bones
This might not sound like a regular oral hygiene prevention remedy as the strength of your bones isn’t directly related to gingivitis or bleeding gums. However, the strength of the jawbone is important in this case. If your bones do not have enough calcium, they shrink and start getting brittle, the same can happen to your jawbone. If you get 800 milligrams of calcium everyday, your chances of acquiring a gum disease will drop significantly. The alveolar bone is the one that holds your teeth in a correct form. It can be strengthened with the help of some calcium; dairy products are the best source of calcium, and you can also resort to calcium supplements if needed.
  • Gum stimulator
A gum stimulator is a slightly better option than your regular toothpick as the hardness of the toothpick can cause injuries to your gums. A gum stimulator is usually made of rubber and is in a specially designed triangular shape, which is ideal for cleaning the gums and maintaining a good level of dental hygiene. Maintaining a high level of dental hygiene for your gums is equivalent to preventing bleeding gums and gingivitis. A gum stimulator also works well in cleaning the surfaces between the teeth. You must rest the rubber point between two teeth and point the tip in the direction of the biting surface. This gum stimulator should be at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Use it in a circular motion and do not use it for more than 10 minutes on one tooth.
  • Choose your toothbrush
Even if most people say that an electric toothbrush is better than a manual one, the American Dental Association still believes that a manual toothbrush works as good as an electric one. The type of toothbrush doesn’t matter to a large extent if you are completing your brushing drills effectively. The electric toothbrush can be helpful for people who have limited movement of the arms or hand braces.
